Referring to all the equipment and especially the superfluous gear infantrymen carried during the Vietnam War, author Tim O’Brien noted that they carried extra anyway.  He said is was partly for safety and partly for the illusion of safety.

I wonder how much extra stuff each of us carries along.  What illusions ride in our field packs without recognition?  Which make us safer and which simply contribute to the illusion?

I wonder how many of us don’t notice that there might not be a war.
