The word mudita means sympathetic joy or deep gladness for another. This is one of those wonderful words and concepts that fit the saying: the devil is in the details.

At first we think “what a wonderful notion.” “What a thoughtful thing to be able to do.”

Something we can all get behind?

I doubt it’s that easy. I think to experience mudita would take amazing patience and acceptance.  It would force us to truly believe we’re all in this together. Even things and people we really, really need to “work at…” Those who can push every one of our emotional buttons.

Imagine practicing mudita toward a colleague who just got a promotion you wanted; a neighbor who just experienced a windfall profit; a political candidate (from another party) who just won an election.

Lovingkindness has limits, you know!

Where does mudita end with you?  Where does it  offer a starting point for your next step on the path?
